Garden Lake Park-Creswell
Thirty-three acre Garden Lake Park is a natural park located on the east side of Creswell on Melton Road. It is surrounded by commercial and residential land to the south and east and Interstate 5 to the west. The north edge of the park forms the edge of the urban growth boundary. Facilities include benches, picnic tables, bathroom, trails, dock/pier and trash receptacle.

Directions: From 33rd and Hilyard, go LEFT onto E Amazon. Travel south on E Amazon to Dillard Rd. (Dillard Rd is to the L of a deer sign on the R) turn LEFT (the only way to go) on Dillard RD.. Travel up Dillard Rd. about 2.3mi to Teague Loop (Teaque Loop is R, just opposite a hugh sign on the L that says 'Dillard Highlands') turn RIGHT onto Teague Loop. Halfway down the loop, take the first gravel driveway to the RIGHT (there is a wooden sign 'Teamwork for Children'). Proceed 300ft downhill, take first driveway on LEFT (85444Teague Loop), that is the driveway, 1/4 mi to house. carpooling is an option. (I live about a mile and a half up from the the Alpaca Farm and accross the road from Ridgetop Drive)

Oakridge paintout.
Friday april 30, Greenwaters Park and Trails This location is on the east end of Oakridge along Highway 58. It offers a large covered picnic area, footbridge across the river leads to a well maintained trail partially along the river, lots of mature trees, lots of shade trees in the park itself, beautiful view of the Middle Fork, well maintained trails with forest and river views, water and restrooms. Restaurants are close by. Salmon Creek Levee trail begins at the adjoining rest area, with gorgeous views of this pristine little river. LOTS of parking and close access for your gear. Saturday May 1 Willamette Fish Hatchery and Interpretive Trail This place is a gem for painting on location. The hatchery is beautifully landscaped and has a few woodcarvings by famous chainsaw carver, Don Colp. There is a museum on site, restrooms, covered picnic area, putting game that teaches about the life of a salmon; and an interpretive trail that winds through old growth cottonwoods, maples, and firs. This trail is short, level, and offers several beautiful views of Salmon Creek. The hatchery employees live in quaint houses that are grouped into a beautiful little village. Parking is very good. For those who like to pack light and walk a ways to paint, the Salmon Creek trail begins at the Fish Hatchery and winds upriver to an area called “The Gorge”. It is a gorgeous canyon with a footbridge that spans the river, so the trail becomes a loop back downriver to the auto bridge, and back to the hatchery. First, I would like to say a big 'Thanks' to Brooks for all he has done to create this wonderful and talented group of Plein Air painters, and, for trusting me to make the monthly calendars. It's a big job to fill his shoes, and I will do my best, with your help. I feel that this is 'our' group and I look forward to your input on, locations to paint, finding and hanging shows, info on classes and workshops, and any other announcements pertinent to the group. March 5, Friday, 5:30pm to 8:30pm First Friday reception for Material Artistry, Fabric art group show, at Jacobs Gallery in the Hult. Amazing color and texture.

March 10, Wednesday, Cherry Tree in Owen Rose Garden Paintout. The Cherry Tree should be blooming. North on Jefferson past 1st. St. till it ends in the garden parking lot.

March 12 and 13, Friday and Saturday. 5th St. Market Paintout. Meet in the Patio. Cover, coffee, lunch and restrooms with near by Spring color and iews of market and streets. Lindsey Autry has invited us to hang a show at 5th St. Market. This will give us a chance to paint some more market views for the show.

March 17, Wednesday, Mt. Pisgah Spring Paintout. East on 30th past LCC over I5. Left on access road. Right on 99 under RR then left on Seavey Loop Road all the way to Mt. March 19 and 20, Friday and Saturday, EWEB Spring Paintout, Spring colors at EWEB. Rhodys should be blooming. Look for visitor parking places at 4th and Ferry St.

March 24, Wednesday, UO Hayward Field Paintout. Students are on Spring break so this is a do over. Rod and I both missed the last Hayward Field Paintout. Some cover and restrooms under the bleachers, but the best views are out in the open. Parking in the UO area is $1 per hour, or 2 hour limit in the neighborhood.

March 26 and 27, Friday and Saturday, UO EMU Paintout. Meet near the EMU, 13th and University. Parking $1 per hour. Collier House and Johnson Hall are across the street, as well as Pioneer father and mother. The students should still be gone so there will be plenty of parking available.

January 30, Saturday, Pick up "Plein Air Art About Agriculture" paintings at Emerald Art Center, 500 Main St. Springfield. The EAC is open 11am to 4pm. If you cannot pickup your painting please let me or Guy Weese at EAC know. This really is a nice show. Thank you all for bringing paintings.

February 10, Wednesday, Owens Rose Garden Cherry Tree Paintout. North on Jefferson till it dead ends in the parking lot. We can paint the cherry tree without the pesky leaves in the way. Restrooms are open in the winter and some cover at the gazebo.

Feb. 20 Saturday. 2-4pm. Brooks' demo at the Duck Store, 13th and Kincaide St. I title this demo "Painting Recovery Act" as I will paint over an old painting. Wish me luck. This is downstairs in the basement. Not exactly plein air.

Feb. 24, Wednesday. Hayward Field Paintout. Classic lines of Hayward Field keep calling to us. 15th at Agate St. The gate on Agate is usually open. Restrooms under the stadium and cover in the stands. However, the best views are out in the open. Good luck.

Feb 26 and 27th, Friday and Saturday. Island park winter paintout. West on B st. till it dead ends in the parking lot of Island Park. Good winter views of the Willamette and Springfield Bridge without those pesky leaves getting in the way. Restrooms in the Willamalane Center next to the park and cover under the pavilions.

March 3, Wednesday. Hendricks Park early spring paintout. South on Walnut from Franklin Ave. Right on Fairview for a couple of blocks then left on Summit Ave. Left at the T and then left again to the Rhody Garden. There is a shelter at the T in the road and restrooms in the Rhody garden. Early blooms and few leaves to block the view.

January 2010 Plein Air Painting Schedule for Eugene-Springfield

Happy New Year, Welcome to the 2010s. Winter painting is exciting in the the Willamette Valley. We get clouds, sun, wind, rain, and snow. Sometimes in a single day. I have scheduled paintouts in town with cover and I have scheduled a single location for a whole week. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. That way we have backups. It the weather is too cold for you on Wednesday, I hope you can come on Friday or Saturday. When the high temp is below freezing I am staying home, but there are so many sunny and 50 days that I am optimistic that we will get several nice painting days in January. Let's continue to have critiques at 1pm when the most painters are present.

January 5-6, Tuesday-Wednesday, pick up your paintings from Silvan Ridge Winery, 27012 Briggs Hill Rd, Eugene, OR‎ between noon and 4pm, This has been a very nice show. If you want to use your Silvan Ridge Winery painting in the Plein Air Art About Agriculture show please let me and Cynthia Nickle, at Silvan Rigde winery, know so they will not get excited when you show up on Saturday, January 2nd, and start taking paintings off their walls.

January 6, 8, and 9th, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Midtown Market Paintout, 16th and Willamette. They have coffee, lunch, cover and restrooms. Views of VFW Hall, Midtown Arts Center across the street, Newman's Fish Market and Willamette Street Views. Market is open till 3pm but we can paint all day. This is a new location for us, but I have painted here several times and I like it. Critique 1pm inside near the front windows that look out on Willamette St.

January 8, Friday, 5:30-8:30pm, is the Artists reception at Emerald Art Center. Please stop by to support our show and the other artists with concurrent shows at Emerald Art. Brooke Borcherding will have a wall full of paintings concurrent with our show. NIce going Brooke, good scheduling. Please bring a dessert or snack to share with the other artists and art patons.

Jean Denis Show at Springfield Museum

The Springfield Museum is pleased to announce an upcoming exhibition of encaustic and oil paintings by Jean M. Denis. Her work emerged from her fascination with ancient Egypt. She has developed a series of paintings which are her endeavor to emulate the essence of individual inhabitants who lived in the Fayum district in Egypt over 2000 years ago. At that time, portraits were painted while the person was still alive and placed over the face of the mummy upon their death. Some were so lifelike that when discovered, it looked as if there was a living person inside the sarcophagus. Ms Denis uses the same process of ‘encaustic’ painting that the original artists used which is essentially pigmented beeswax that is heated, painted, and ‘burned in’ or fused onto the board with a blow torch or heat gun. The show goes up January 5, 2010, with a demo and opening on Friday, January 15, 2010. Please join us for this unique and captivating show.

December 2009 Plein Air Paintout Schedule

Plein Air Painters:

Short days, cool weather and a little rain. December in the beautiful Willamette Valley. Time to paint outside.

Several painters have requested we schedule a critique on our paintouts. Good idea. Since some painters are early birds and others paint after lunch, I suggest we gather at 1pm each paintout for a critique and feedback on any painting we are working on or any painting from previous paintouts that we would like suggestions on. Critiques will be optional, but it will give us a chance to see works by other artists. So often in the past we have left at the end of the day and we did not get to see each other's work. I love to see everyone's work and I certainly appreciate suggestions on my own paintings.

I would like to thank everyone for all their help at our plein air shows and luncheon get togethers this last month. Special thanks to Tom and Karen Reid, and Rod and Anna Gillilan for hosting us and feeding us. How very nice they are. And thanks to the Creswell Library, Silvan Ridge Winery and the McKenzie Orchards B and B for hanging our paintings. We do have some wonderful friends. For anyone who has not seen the shows it is worth the visit. The Creswell Library show will be up through December 5th, the Silvan Ridge Winery show will be up till January 5th and the McKenzie Orchards B and B paintings will be up all winter.

December 2, Wed., Park Blocks Paintout. Downtown Eugene. 8th and Oak St. There is cover in the park, restrooms by Karin Clarke Gallery on Willamette, and hot coffee at Bagel Sphere. We will use the covered area for 1pm critique.

A couple of miles on Seavey to Mt. Pisgah. $2 parking fee. We will be in the shelter with sliding doors for the 1pm critique.

December 16, Wed., UO Winter Break Paintout. Meet at the ERB, Student Union, at 13th and University for cover and critique at 1pm. Buildings, trees and students to paint. $1 per hour parking in the University area.

December 18-19, Friday and Saturday, UO Paintout at the Lillith Business Center, 13th St. past the UO Bookstore. Large open spaces inside to paint in case of rain. (watercolor only if you paint inside - they have beautiful floors). The 1pm critique will be in the Lillith lobby.

December 23, Wednesday, EWEB Winter Solstice Paintout. Good cover and view of Willamette River. Restrooms inside EWEB building. The shortest day we will paint out this winter.

December 30, Wednesday, Art Block Paintout. Willamette St. between 7th and 8th. Lots of cover from city garage over Karin Clarke's Gallery. Critique near Karin Clarke's gallery. Bagel Sphere near by. Street views of historic buildings.

January 2, Saturday, 11-4pm, Deliver paintings for “Plein Air Art about Agriculture” Show at Emerald Art, 500 Main St., Springfield. Only one painting per artist. We should have lots of paintings from farms to markets in Willamette Valley.

Four Plein Air Painting Shows in November 2009

The crab guy did not come through for our Silvan Ridge reception, so we each need to bring hors d'œuvres or desserts to the November 22, Sunday, 1-4pm Artist Reception at Silvan Ridge 27012 Briggs Hill Road Eugene, Oregon 97405 Cynthia Nickles is out host. Hinman will have wine to taste or buy. They even sell wine by the glass.

The "Save the Old Schoolhouse" committee is hosting our reception at the Creswell Library Saturday November 14th, 2-4pm. I checked with Paul and they are bringing hors d'œuvres and desserts, but this is a small committee so maybe we should bring goodies to this event also. This is strictly optional, but I do believe it would be a nice jesture.

Guy Weese has requested images for our "Agrculture Art" Show scheduled for January at Emerald Art Center. If you have an image of a painting you would like to bring to our January show, please send it to me. thanks. Any agriclutural scene will do, from fields to market place. Thistle down and Friday Market come to mind.

Many of you have asked me to let you know when Sarkis was going to be on OPB’s Oregon Art Beat. I have just learned from Karen Antikajian that the program will air on Thursday, November 19th at 8pm and will repeat on Sunday, November 22 at 6pm. After the story airs, it will be online for anyone to view for free, at http://www.opb.org/artbeat.

Sarkis will also be doing painting demos at the U of O Bookstore (The Duck Store) from 10am to 6 pm on November 18th and 19th during their "Tools of the Trade" Sale.

This is the week to frame paintings and deliver paintings for Plein Air Painting shows. This is four shows in November. I hope everyone is busy enough.

We will be covering mark making in this intensive October 30th 3-hour atelier. We will explore how a painter might use the repetition of a mark through shape, value and color to create movement, emphasis and direction in a painting. Cool stuff! Everyone welcome. Springfield Market Plein Air Show

Hello!

I am sending you this email because you signed up at Emerald Art to participate in this project, Plein Air Painting at Springfield Friday Market.

My first questions are: "Did you actually participate in this project?" and "If you did, do you plan to display work in the Springfield City Hall Gallery?"

If the answer to these questions is "No." then you don't need the information below. However, even if you do not plan to participate, I would appreciate it if you would let me know that as soon as possible, so I can do the best possible planning for those who do participate.

The exhibit will hang in the Springfield City Hall Gallery from November 3 until November 30. The City does not charge a commission, and all your works will be insured while they are in our possession. Any sales of work will be up to the individual artist to arrange with the buyer. Each work must remain hanging for the duration of the exhibit, unless you make other arrangements with me.
All works must be adequately framed.

Memorial Service October 25, 2009 for Katheryn Davis

Katheryn Davis has been a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon since 1972. You cannot enter a gallery along the Oregon Coast without seeing her paintings. Rod Gillilan and I took a workshop from her in 2007. We will all miss her very much.

Plein Air Painters of Eugene-Springfield October 2009 Calender

I talked to Humberto Gonzalez yesterday and he told me that Oregon State is not going to host an Art about Agriculture Show this next year, 2010. Humberto talked to Shelley Curtis recently and she said she will send out an official notice in the near future. This is a real disappointment for all of us who have participated in previous shows. I believe they have been sponsoring this show for 26 years.

Humberto Gonzalez and Yolanda Valdes are showing 40 painting at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany. This show will be up both October and November.

I suggest we have our own “Art about Agriculture” show in January at the Emerald Art Center. This will give us a theme for our show in the Jaqua Gallery of Emerald Art that Guy Weese has scheduled for the Plein Air Painters of Eugene-Springfield. Let me know if you think this might work. I believe we all have paintings of wineries, grape vines, barns, pumpkins, farmers market and other agriculture subjects..

October 2, Friday, Springfield Farmer’s Market, Between Emerald Art and the Springfield Museum, 500 Main St., is the Friday Farmers Market. People, produce, lattes, and scones....what more could we ask for. Restrooms in Emerald Art. Springfield is planning a show for “Paintings at the Market” after the season is over.

Sept. 2, Wednesday: Rod and Jean Mirich invited us to paint at their house on Fern Ridge at the end of Conrad Rd. Drive west on 11th st. (Hw 126) past Perkins Point to the first street past Fern Ridge, right on Ellmaker Road 1.1 miles to dead end at stop sign. Left on Jeans Road one block then right on Conrad Road. It is 8/10 mile to end of Conrad Rd. (half is gravel). Then Left 50 ft. and right to 89132 Conrad Rd. Large RV next to white garage and a white house with grass down to the water. There is limited parking so car pool if you can. Rod's cell is 616-405-1028 and my cell is 541-520-1423. Great views across Fern Ridge Lake. trees, shade, water and bathrooms.

Sept 4, Friday: Evening paintout at Mathews Community Gardens, 15th St. and Hayes St. West on 18th to Chambers St. Right on Chanbers then left on 15th. 15th ends at the garden parking lot. I have a garden plot at Mathews Garden. Lots of veggies and people to paint. Peak tomato season. I will be there to let painters in and out from 2 to 7pm. Evening paintout for the colors. Parking lot is small but there is additional parking on the street. Restrooms are at Albertson’s at 18th and Chambers. First Art about Agriculture paintout.

Sept. 18th, Friday, UO Johnson Hall and Collier House are at the corner of University and 13th, across form the ERB student center. Pay parking is at the ERB. Pioneer Father and Pioneer Mother are here too. Great campus views. Few students as they are mostly home this week.

Sept. 19th, Saturday, Hendricks Park paintout. South from Franklin Ave. on Walnut St. Right on Fairmont then left on Summit into the park. Left to the Rhody Gardens. This is game day so watch the UO traffic and listen for the crowds.

From west 11th St. south on Bertelsen to Spencer Creek Road. Right on Spencer Creek Road (there are blue Hinman Winery signs) 2 miles and then left on Briggs Hill Road. 3.5 miles to the winery entrance on the left. Mill race waterfall is across from visitor center. Visitor center has restrooms and water. Wooden deck overlooks falls, and you can climb down the bank next to falls.

Sept. 30th, Wednesday, Skinner Butte Evening Paintout, 2-7pm. Skinner Butte overlooks down town Eugene. Great views of down town Eugene.

Oct. 2, Friday, Springfield Farmers Market Paintout. Between Emerald Art and the Springfield Museum at the Friday Farmers Market, 500 Main St. Springfield. 9am to 2pm. People, produce, lattes, and scones. What more could we ask for. This is one more Art about Agriculture paintout.

October 2, Friday, 10-5pm, Pickup paintings at Willamlane Center, C St. and Mill St. Springfield. Great show at Island Park Gallery. Thanks to everyone who brought a painting.

August is painting outside at its best in the Willamette Valley. While Erik Sandgren’s Oregon Coast Paintout is from August 3-15, I have scheduled paintouts here for the painters that will be in town. We are invited to help Habitat for Humanity’s Blues and Brew fundraiser on August 8th. I plan to help. We have also been invited to Sarkis and Karen Antikajian’s for a paintout and lunch on August 19, and to a paintout and supper at Victoria Biebron’s on August 29th. Walk around the Center to the Bike trail. Across the bike trail we can walk down to the Willamette River. Lots of shade and river views, plus views of the center itself.

Directions to the Antikajian House - 92941 Allen’s Alley, Cheshire(998-6584)
Go north on Hwy 99 toward Junction City. Shortly before you get there you will come to a traffic light at a junction with Hwy 36. Turn left onto Hwy 36 toward Cheshire. After you reach Cheshire, continue on Hwy 36 for about a mile and a half. You will pass Hall Road, a Weigh Station on the left, pass Allen Bales road on the right, and Territorial Hwy on the left (which goes to Elmira and Veneta). Continue on Hwy 36 for another block or so. There is a sign: Mapleton 46 miles/Florence 61 miles. There will be several mailboxes right after that. Turn right after the mailboxes and after our neighbor’s driveway onto a private road called Allen’s Alley. The road is short and the two-story white studio is visible from Hwy 36. Go to the top of the hill and follow the road that curves left. We’re the last place. Sign at the entryway says Private Property and the number is 92941. Follow the driveway to the right and you will see a green, barn-like carport. The house is to the left of the carport. It is white with green trim. The studio is to the right and back. Park anywhere on the gravel or on the cement pad in front of the house.

August 22, Saturday, Mt. Pisgah Summer Paintout, West on 30th St. across I5, left and then right a block past Shell Station, under RR then left on Seavey Loop Road all the way to Mt. Pisgah Arboretum on the right. Water, restrooms, great views along the river...good shade...$3 parking fee.

Autust 26, Wednesday, Willamalane Paintout, Mill St. at C. St. Springfield Oregon, We have a show at Island Park Gallery inside Willamalane Center. Good shade and views of the river from Island Park. Restrooms at Willamalane and check out the paintings.

Habitat for Humanity is hosting Brews and Blues Festival on Aug 7-8 at Island Park in Springfield. They would like to have plein air painters volunteer their time and donate their painting that day to Habitat for Humanity. I got this request from Kristina Stewart. But there are restrooms and water and the river view along this part of the South Bank Trail is stunning. Oh yes, lots of shade. First St. west, right on Adams to the river (3 blocks).

They open at noon, but we can come early and make ourselves at home. We can bring a picnic lunch or snacks. The Hinman sisters are glad to have us.

June 17, Wednesday, UO has renovated it Performance Theater near Dede Hall behind Lillth Business Center...take EMX to Dad's Gate UO stop and walk south into campus. Parking is $1/hour near the UO Coop. Students are out this week so we can paint anywhere.

June 19, 20, Friday and Saturday, UO Paintout - Near Snitzer Art Museum. Open mall is original UO campus. Views of Art Museum, Knight Library, Lillth Business Center. Lots to paint and we can visit the Art Museum too.

June 24, Wednesday, Owosso Bike Bridge Paintout, No water or restrooms, but nice bridge and great Willamette River views. Access from Owosso Dr. off River Road (right before Beltline) or from Riverwalk Loop off Goodpasture Loop on the other side of the river. Park on the street and walk a little ways down bike path to either side of bike bridge.

June 26, Friday, Sweet Cheeks Winery Paintout (noon - 9pm) 26961 Briggs Hill Road Eugene, Oregon 97405. Take West 11th or West 18th out to Bertelsen Rd. Turn Left. Continue on Bertelsen to crossroads with Spencer Creek. Turn right on Spencer Creek Rd and continue for about 2 miles. Turn left on Briggs Hill Rd. The winery entrance will appear on the Right in about 3.5 miles. We can stay for Friday evening painting and/or winetasting Sweet Cheeks is open noon-9pm on Friday. May 6th and 9th, Wednesday and Saturday, Island Park Paintout, Spring colors at Island Park. There is cover in case of rain. Restrooms are in Willamalane Center at C and Mill. Drive west on B st. until it ends in the parking lot of Island Park

May 8th, Friday, West D St. in Springfield paintout - Drive west on D St., left at Aspen to Boat Ramp. No cover or restrooms. So if it rains I will be at the Willamalane Center at C st. and Mill St...this is the closest restroom too. Great river view, Roaring Rapids Pizza is across the river.

May 13th, Wednesday, EWEB Plaza – 4th and Ferry St. Eugene - Finally some warm weather to paint the river. Look for "visitor parking" signs. Restrooms are inside the main entrance, to the left. The view from the DeFazio footbridge is stunning.

May 15th, Friday, Renee Nelson’s backyard - Renee's address is 2375 Wilson drive-- phone is 465-2158. directions are: west on 18th, left on City View, right on 23rd, left on Wilson. My house is the third on the left. parking on the street, also in my driveway is fine. No need to ring the doorbell, go directly into the back yard through the gate to the right of the driveway. There is a covered patio with utility sink, and bathroom off the garage, There should be plenty of things blooming in the garden , if skies are clear a good view of the cascades. Humberto Gonzalez and Yolando Valdes will be in town and may stop by - Renee.

There is an expansive view of west Eugene wetlands... but, NO drinking or painting water. Bring your own. Erik Sandgren is still planning a wetlands art show when he returns from Italy.

May 22-23, Friday-Saturday, Kirk Park Paintout - North on 99 past Beltline, left on Clear Lake Road, 6 miles on the right while Fern Ridge Dam is on the left. Port-a-potty but no drinking water. Good wetland views. There is no cover, so hopefully it will not be raining one of these days.

Hello in the nick of time! -Were off to Italy – but first…

We’re counting on your contribution to painting on the Oregon coast in August as we discussed last year. Please link to my website for the itinerary/schedule for the painting event as a whole and for the workshop within it.

It may seem that the whole world has gone digital: but not quite – some of us are not linked up. Because I’ll be in Italy from now into July, please reach out (by phone and post) to those you know might like to join us but may not otherwise get the news. I’ll be sending announcements/itineraries by post to as many people without e-mail as I have addresses for.

If you plan to attend any part of the event, I’d love to hear from you. And, of course you can just show up – that’s the most important thing. If you have a particular interest in registering for the embedded workshop please respond by return e-mail or by the e-mail contact on my website. As I cannot count on receiving registrations by post for the next four months, I’ll be in touch with you by e-mail and we’ll finalize registration when we return to the U.S. in early July.

The workshop is scheduled for three days early in the overall painting event. Fees will be the same as last year. I enjoy teaching these three days of concentrated demonstration and problem solving and people seem to look forward to this structured exploration of painterly issues based on assignments and critiques. I don’t quite know how many registrations to expect this year. Despite the circumstances of our being out of the country I’ll try to accommodate as many painters as may be interested in sharing the workshop format.

Only recently have the long anticipated plans for teaching abroad come to fruition – we were delayed in accumulating the full complement of study-abroad students due to the nation’s economic uncertainties - but Kathryn and I will be leaving this week for Florence where I’ll be teaching Art Appreciation and Drawing to a dozen Washington state Community College students there. What a place to do so! My painting gear is all packed- nothing else is. Over the last month we’ve been subject to the special deadlines those arrangements have entailed including gearing up with software and protocols to make the digital communications happen. The learning curve never ends.

With luck, we look forward to coming back to our very beautiful and inspiring corner of the world – trading dusky Tuscan hillsides for Pacific waves and Doug Firs. Expect another e-mail soon about a three-day workshop I have been invited to conduct in September for the BLM at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. It is a pilot program we are very excited about. You can see that on the website also.

Plein Air Eugene/Springfield Calender for March 2009

Spring is getting closer and closer. We painted at Hendricks park this last week and there were several Rhodys already blooming...amazing.
March 4, 6, and 7, Wed, Fri. and Saturday this week we are painting the 160 year old cherry tree at Owens Rose Garden. This is taking a chance because there is not cover near by the tree. So if it rains we get wet or move to the gazebo. Maybe one of these days will be nice. North on Jefferson from 1st St. ends in the Owens garden parking lot. (400 N. Jefferson).
March 11, 13, and 14, Wed, Fri, and Saturday next week we are painting at Lane Community College Main campus on E. 30th.
Meet outside the Central Build. The building with the student union and library in it. There is cover and coffee and view of the trees, buildings and surrounding hills.
March 18, 20 and 21, Wed, Fri. and Saturday week after next we are going to Mt. Pisgah. Drive east on 30th past LCC, over I5, immediate left then right at Shell station. This is Seavey Loop Rd. and it turns left within half a mile (watch the signs) and continues 2 miles to the park. $2 parking fee. We can use the large open barn if it is raining.
March 25, 27 and 28, Wed, Fri. and Saturday is spring break at UO. So we have to paint on campus. Wednesday we will be in the park next to the EMU, 15th and University, The EMU Student Union is our refuge in case of rain. Friday and Saturday we will be on the mall next to the Schnitzer Museum and Knight Library...in case of rain we can use the Museum or Library, but we can only draw inside the Museum. I have asked permission to paint inside the museum and have been turned down. I certainly understand why...so bring sketch pads and drawing material in case of rain. Parking near UO has gone up to $1 per hour.
April 1, 3, and 4, Wed. Fri. and Saturday we are back at Hendricks Park. Many more Rhodys and Azelas should be in bloom. South from Franklin on Walnut to Fairmont Ave. then left on summit Ave. to the park. In case of rain we will be at the shelter. If the weather is nice we will be in the Rhody park.

February 2009 Paintout Locations for Plein Air Painters of Eugene-Springfield

Feb. 4, 6, 7, Wed. Fri. Sat. Amazon Station at 29th St. and Amazon Parkway. This bus station has cover and parking. The views are Amazon Park and Skinner Butte. This is a new location for us, but it looks like good cover for winter painting. And we are close to Market of Choice on 29th. St. for Coffee and food.

Feb. 11, 14, Wed. and Sat., Rosa Parks Sculpture Paintout. Eugene has a new outdoor sculpture of Rosa Parks on her bus seat. It is a small unassuming sculpture, but I feel compelled to capture her in a painting. Eugene Station is now called Rosa Parks Station, 10th and Olive. Some cover, but to get a good view of Rosa we need fair weather. Cover, restrooms and coffee across the street at Eugene Library. I have painted from inside the library in really bad weather. Saturday is a backup day in case of rain on Wednesday.

Feb 13, Friday. Harold and Flora Codman have invited us to paint from their covered decks that overlook downtown Eugene from 1-4pm. Directions: Drive south on Chambers past 29th. St. Turn left at Braeman Village, the second block past 29th.
1557 Braeman Village is on the left. Park in their driveway or along street. Please RSVP so that Harold and Flora will know how many people to expect. Harold and I paint with the Wet-N-Wild watermedia group at Campbell Center every Tuesday afternoon. Last summer Harold turned 90 years old.

Feb. 18, 20, 21, Wed. Fri. Sat. EWEB Plaza Paintout. Cover, restrooms, and a view of the raging Willamette River. The river will be full and running wild. In case of rain we can paint from EWEB's covered porches or under the Ferry St. Bridge or DeFazio bridge.

Feb. 25, 27, 28, Wed. Fri., Sat. Hendricks Park Paintout. Early, early spring at Hendricks Park. South on Walnut St. from Franklin. Left on Summit. We will be at the shelter in case of rain. We will be in the Rhody garden if the weather is nice.

I am checking out painting in the snow. Campbell Center takes snow shoers up to different locations and I have asked if I can go along and paint in the snow. Currently their Feb. 26th and March 5th trips to a cabin near Royce Mtn. are full and they are taking wait-listings. The cost is $30 for the transportation up and back. Leaving at 8:30 am and returning at 5pm. If anyone would like to try to join me on the Feb. 26. trip you can call 682-5318 and get on their wait-list. They usually have cancellations. If this works out maybe we can schedule a trip for just us plein air painters next year ( the van holds 12 people).

Great Outdoor Painting Contest: July 25, 2009

Plein air Painters: Charlene Eckman called and said the Springfield Arts Commission is looking for someone to take over the Annual Outdoor Painting Contest in Island Park. She thought of us first and so I am sending out this note to get your reaction.

The question is do we want to sponsor this event (in combination with Willamalane Rec. Dist.)?
Specifically reply if you would like to help with this event?

Work required would be meeting with Willamalane to plan the event. (Willamalane has handled all the publicity for this event in the past, and they provide the shelter in the park.)
In the past this has been a contest with a juror, ribbons for several categories, a judging at 2pm. where with winner are hung in the Springfield City Hall for the month of August. The Art Commission has charged an $8 entry and used the money to buy ribbons.

So I am looking for a couple of volunteers who would like to do the planning for this, and half dozen more volunteers to help on the actually painting day, July 25th, 2009.
This is community service. We would be doing this for the community. The secondary benefit for us would be publicity and a few more members.

Rod Gillilan's - "Why paint plein air"

Rod sent me this note after our Friday paintout, January 9, 2008. I really liked his comments on "why paint plein air" so I have included his whole note here. I believe that Rod is too critical of his own paintings. He has suggested that we have a critique at the end of the painting session. Good idea. Here is Rod's complete note.

Hi again Brooks:

We talked Friday about why we like to do plein air. These are some of my thoughts about why I like it.

When you are on site It is sort of like being at a concert or a football game instead of watching it on TV. You can see and hear it either way but the experience is very different and my emotions are different.

My paintings done totally plein air have not been very good. However, The thrill and excitement of being immersed in the scene is much more fun. I do like the paintings I have done from plein air sketches, however. Maybe more imaginative and loose. It may be sort of like when I have gone fishing when the fishing was great but the catching wasn't. Just being there (even in the cold and wet) is a good experience and my memories of it are move vivid than they are from painting from one of my photos.

The tranquility of a landscape location or the energy and action of a city scape location affects my perceptions I think. Quite different than looking at a photograph.

I am still not very good at plein air painting, as I mentioned earlier, but feel much more comfortable and confident now than when I first started. Landscapes were overwhelming at first, but now I can zero in on a "cropped" subject a little better. Having people around in city sites was distracting at first, but much less now.

I am sorry to say that most of my paintings are still done from photos because painting plein air was not practical, but I hope to shift more to plein air as I can. As I mentioned to you, you spoiled me. When painting from a photo, I WISH I were on site.

Nov. 7-8, Friday-Saturday, Fall colors at Hendricks park. From Franklin South on Walnut, left on Summit, left at dead end to rhody garden. Shelter in case of rain. Hendricks park in October was beautiful. Too good to not try again.

Nov.12, Wed.,Fall colors at Mt. Pisgah. East on 30th past LCC, across I5,
left to Shell staion, right under RR and then half mile to Seavey Loop on the left.
A couple of miles on Seavey to Mt. Pisgah. $2 parking fee. Mt. Pisgah was also
beautiful in October.

Georgia O'Keeffe's Birthday 1887, (November 15)
and Dorothy Frear (November 17) a double birthday celebration.
No gifts, just come and celebrate Georgia's and Dorothy's birthday at 1pm.
Come and paint all day. In case of rain we will be at the gazebo.

Nov. 15, Saturday, Skinner Butte Paintout. North on Pearl,
left on 3rd. St. behind Ya-Pa-Ah Terrace. Water but no restrooms.
Great views of Eugene all the way to three Sisters..
No cover, if it rains we can paint at 5th St. Mkt. where the restrooms are.

End of season for Thistledown. Paint the pumpkins. market. barn, and
other "art about agriculture" entries. Out River Road between Eugene and

The last of fall colors in Island Park.
West on B St. dead ends in parking lot for Island Park.
Willamalane Center will have restrooms and a place to warm up a little.

Oct 6---Monday---Suttle Lake Resort---The Resort will be open, lake views, small marina, bathrooms, shade,
parking, restaurant. From Eugene, East on hwy 126 to Hwy 20, about 5 miles past Santiam Pass make a right
at Suttle lake resort, follow the signs to the lodge.
Oct 7---Tuesday---Drake Park/Mirror Pond, downtown Bend, some free parking along Franklin Ave, city parking
at Franklin and Wall st. (first two hours free), bathrooms, water, shade walk to restaurants.
Oct 8---Wednesday---Farewell Bend Community Park. Very nice new park along the Deschutes River. within
sight of the Old Mill Shopping district. Three covered shelters (in case of rain this will be my fall back site on
other days as well) interesting cliff and river views, bathrooms, water, little shade except the shelters,
easy parking all along the trail. Located off Reed Market road and Alderwood Ave. From Downtown Bend
take Bond street, ( Go through some roundabouts but stay on Bond ) then right on to Reed market road.
Oct 9---Thursday---Smith Rock State Park. From Bend take Hwy 97 north for 21 miles passing through Redmond.
About 4 miles past Redmond you come to Terrebonne. At the yellow traffic light turn right onto B ave. Go .5 miles
then left onto First St. go 2 miles and look for the small entrance sign. Drive time from Bend 28 min. three dollar fee,
bathrooms. water "epic panorama of unexpected beauty."
Oct 10---Friday---Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory. From Bend take Hwy 97 south for 12 miles, turn right
at Sunriver, follow Nature center signs through three traffic circles-turn at 3 o'clock in the first circle, 11 o'clock in the second,
and 9 o'clock in the third Or stop and ask for directions at the village mall. Parking anywhere along the road in
Sunriver is forbidden. This is one of the few places where we can park our cars. I was told we could use the
gravel parking lot and the restroom without having to pay the entrance fee of two dollars. Since it is so little
I will pay it anyway. There are wonderful views of the meadows, wetlands and also river views.

Oct 11---Saturday---Tumalo State Park. Located about 5 miles N W of bend. From Bend head towards Sisters,
watch for a Park sign on your left, travel one mile to the park day use area. Nice views of Tumalo creek,
interesting rock formations shade, bathrooms, water.
Oct 12---Sunday---Mirror Pond/Drake Park again. Parking could be a challenge but a good day to paint people
in your landscapes.
Oct 13---Monday---Wizard Falls hatchery. Metolius River. I have seen some beautiful sights in my day but this
spot really knocked my socks off. On the way back to Eugene, about 10 miles past Sisters, turn right at
"Head of the Metolius/Camp Sherman" sign, follow signs to the fish hatchery, it's about 10 miles. Bathrooms,
water, parking, no fee but bring quarters to feed the fish.

I love painting outside in Oregon in the Fall. There is good weather and great color. I have had several requests for critiques. This will give us feed back on our paintings of the day. Sept. 3, Wed. Mathews Garden Evening Paintout, 4pm - 8pm, 15th St. at Hayes St. Eugene Oregon. Mathew Community Gardens have Sunflowers, tomatos, corn, and garden plots to paint. Peggie and I have an allotment at Mathews Gardens and will be there 4-8pm. Water but no restrooms. Closest restroom is Albertson's at 18th and Chanbers, three blocks away. Parking on street and in small lot.
Sept. 5, Friday, West D street Greenway, Springfield Oregon. West D street at Aspen Street, Drive west on D Street, left on Aspen. Parking by a boat ramp on the Willamette. Water and restrooms at park near Aspen and D St....great views of the river, a backwater pond on Pre's trail.
Sept.6, Saturday, Island Park Springfield Paintout under the bridge, Across Springfield bridge, first right will loop under the bridge. This is the end of Mill Street. There is parking and water and restrooms. Views of the river and the bridge.
Sept 10, Wed. Oregon Natural and Cultural History Paintout on UO Campus, 1680 E. 15th St. Eugene Oregon, Behind the Knight Law School. Garden, meteorite, salmon and indian statue, park across the street...lots to paint. Parking on street at meters.
Sept. 12, Friday, Jordon Snitzer Museum Paintout, UO Campus, Students are gone this week, but we still have to pay parking meters. The open space in front of the museum is the original college square. Lots of building, trees, and sculptures to paint...even a few students.
Sept. 13, Sat. Dede Hall at UO Paintout, One of the oldest building on campus, behind Lillith Business Center on 13th near UO bookstore. We must pay to park and the students are returning. Dede hall has a row of Douglas Fir along the front walk and maples around back. It is very scenic.
Sept. 17, Wed. Hinman Winery Paintout, 27012 Briggs Hill Rd, Eugene, OR 97405. http://www.silvanridge.com/
(541) 345-1945 for the winery. South on Baily Hill road, becomes Bertelsen to Spencer Creek Road. Right on Spencer Creek Road (there are blue Hinman Winery signs) 2 miles and then left on Briggs Hill Road. 3.5 miles to the winery entrance on the left. They open at noon, but we can come early and make ourselves at home(the restrooms have outside access). We can bring a picnic lunch or snacks. The Hinman sisters are glad to have us. Sept. 26, Friday, Roaring Rapids Pizza Paintout, 4006 Franklin Blvd, Eugene Oregon, Roaring Rapids Pizza is right on the river. Great views up and down the river. Water and restrooms, but no cover. So if it rains I am inside eating pizza. They said we can come anytime. The slowest time is 2-4pm. I said we don't bite. People don't bother us.
Sept. 27, Sat. Hendricks Park Fall Paintout, South from Franklin on Walnut St., left on Summit st. to Hendricks Park. I have scheduled fall colors in both the Rhody garden and in the forest. In case of rain we will be under the shelter.

July 2008 Paintout schedule for Plein Air Painter of Eugene-Springfield

July 2, Wednesday, West D St. at Aspen St. Springfield Oregon. Drive west on D Street, left on Aspen. Parking by a boat ramp on the Willamette. No Water, No restrooms...but great views of the river and a backwater pond. We painted here last year and a dozen painters enjoyed it. Water and Restrooms are at Willamlane Center C st. and Mill St. 6 blocks away. This is on Prefontain's running trail so there may be a few runners.

July 4^th, Holiday, no paintout.

July 5^th, Saturday, Renee Nelson's House Evening Paintout, 5pm – 9pm, to enjoy the evening light. Renee's address is 2375 Wilson drive-- phone is 465-2158. directions are: west on 18th, left on City View, right on 23rd, left on Wilson. Her house is the third on the left. Parking on the street, also in Renee’s driveway is fine. No need to ring the doorbell, go directly into the back yard through the gate to the right of the driveway. There is a covered patio with utility sink, and bathroom off the garage, Renee will have tea and coffee available on the back porch. We painted here in May and could see the Three Sisters. July 6-19 will be Erik Sandgren’s Oregon Coast Paintout, so many of our painter will be painting in the state parks near Newport Oregon. I have scheduled four paintouts during these two weeks, but be prepared for only a few painters at each.

July 9^th, Wednesday, Kirk Park Paintout, This is a repeat of a paintout last month for painters that missed it. North on 99 past Beltline, left on Clear Lake Road, 6 miles on the right while Fern Ridge Dam is on the left. Port-a-potty but no drinking water. Good wetland views...one more time.

July 11^th, Friday, Park Blocks Downtown Eugene, 8^th and Oak Street. All the city beautifications for the Olympic Trials will still be up...so we should record them in paintings.

July 16^th and 18^th, Wednesday and Friday, Owens Rose Garden at 400 N. Jefferson – take 1^st or 5^th street and turn north on Jefferson to the Willamette River. This is also a repeat of last month’s Rose Garden Paintout. The roses are stunning this month.

July 23^rd , Wednesday, River House Paintout, 301 N. Adams St. Eugene Oregon, River House is a Eugene Parks and Rec. House. Parking is on the street, and you have to walk a block to the Willamette South Bank Trail. But there are restrooms and water and the river view along this part of the South Bank Trail is stunning. Oh yes, lots of shade. Take 1^st St. west from downtown, right on Adams to the river (3 blocks).

July 25th, Friday, 5pm-9pm, Valley River Center Evening Paintout at the boat ramp near Valley River Inn. Good view of Greenway bridge and Willamette River. Restrooms at Valley River Inn. Nice light in the evening.

July 26th, Saturday, 7am-3pm, Great Outdoor Art Contest at Island park Springfield Oregon, B St. west of Mill St., details are at the Springfield Arts Commission web site http://www.springfieldartscommission.org

June 11, Wednesday and June 14, Saturday, Delta Ponds Wetlands Paintout, Goodpasture Island Rd, Eugene, OR, Drive north out Goodpasture Island Rd. past the car dealers. On the right is parking space (actually about 10 parking spaces) and a port-a-potty, but no water (bring your own). There is a trail leading into the wetlands.

June 13, Friday, Wetlands Kirk Park Paintout, North on 99 past Beltline, left on Clear Lake Road, 6 miles on the right while Fern Ridge Dam is on the left. Port-a-potty but no drinking water. Good wetland views.

June 18, Wednesday, OU Pioneer Cemetery, 18th St. at Univeristy St. Eugene Oregon. Good statues, grave stones, trees, and Mac Court across the street. Students are gone so there is lots of meter parking and 2hr parking in the neighborhood.

June 20, Friday, Skinner Butte Summer Slotice evening paintout. North on Pearl, left behind Ya-Po-Ah to top of Skinner Butte. Water but no restrooms (5th st. mkt. has restrooms). Summer Soltice paintout with the cool evening colors. 2pm to dusk.

June 21, Saturday, UO Snitzer Art Museum, on the grass mall in front of the Jordan Snitzer Art Museum. Students are still on vacation, so there should be parking available.

June 25, Wednesday and June 28, Saturday, Owen Rose Garden paintout. Roses will be in full bloom. North on Jefferson St. into the Rose Garden.

June 27, Friday, King Estates Paintout, 80854 Territorial Rd, Eugene Oregon. South on Bailey Hill road that becomes Lorain Highway (about 11 miles). Left on Territorial 2.7 miles to King Estates on the right. Market Place will be open. Good views from top or bottom of the hill.

July 5, Saturday, Renee Nelson has offered to host an evening paintout (1pm to dusk) at her house. We painted there May 16th to rave reviews by all who attended. Please let me know if you would be available to paint this holiday weekend so Renee and I will know what to expect.

Thanks to Jacki Lukowski, Sandy Larkin, and Peggie Hickerson, we hung 28 painting on May 1st, and I put name tags under them on the May 2^nd. Help us celebrate Sunday. Bring munchies to share and invite your family and friends. Amazing show demonstrates the variety of painting styles of the Plein Air Painters. Painting every week we rarely get to see framed paintings that we have done. Enjoy the moment. The paintings will hang through July. Take down date is July 31, 2008.

We have been invited to paint with the Portland Plein Air Painters at Schreiners Iris Gardens past Salem.
Let's meet at Campbell Center 2nd and High St. and carpool, at 9am. Bring a lunch. We should be back by 5pm.

Let me know if you want to car pool.
They have water, restrooms, picnic tables and acres of Iris.
Directions: North on I5, take exit to Brooks (should be easy for me to remember), cross over freeway to Hw 219,

left on 219 to Quinagy Road, left on Quinaby Road till you seed Iris' galore on your left.
If recent rains you might want to wear boots. It can get muddy.

Frank LaLumia is coming to the Emerald Art Center May 5-9

Frank LaLumia is coming to the Emerald Art Center May 5-9, 2008 to teach a plein air workshop.
We are leaving the registration open until 9 am on May 5th.

We will be painting at Island Park, Hendricks Park, Fern Ridge Lake, and Mt. Pisgah Park. There is still room in this workshop and it is open to beginners through advanced. Most of the currently registered students have never painted outdoors before and they know that Frank will teach us how to view the landscape, make great compostions, and create beautiful renderings in vibrant colors.

Frank will be featured on PBS later this year in a series on plein air painting. His workshops are in high demand throughout the US and Europe and we are fortunate to sponsor this weeklong workshop.

Frank is known for his ability to help each student overcome the problem of "what do I paint in this scene that is so incredibly full of detail, what do I leave out, what do I emphasize, and how do I pick the colors to say what I feel when I look at this scene." You will really enjoy his sweet personality and his generous teaching style.

Pink Adobe Brownies Recipe

Layered Cream Cheese Brownie from “In the Pink”, by Rosalea Murphy

Served at Vincent Van Gogh's Birthday Party, April 2, 2008, in Hendricks Park Eugene Oregon.

¾ Cup Semisweet chocolate chips

3 Tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon Frangelico (liqueur made from hazelnuts)

3 eggs

1 cup sugar

½ cup flour

½ Tablespoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup broken walnuts or pecans

One 3-ounce package of cream cheese, softened

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt the chocolate and butter together in the top of a double boiler. In a bowl, using an electric mixer, beat Frangelico, 2 eggs, and ¾ cup of the sugar until thick and smooth.

In another bowl, stir together the flour, baking power, and salt, and add to the egg mixture. Blend in the chocolate mixture and nuts. Spread half the batter in a nonstick 9x13-inch pan.

Beat the remaining egg and sugar, the cream cheese, and the vanilla together; spread over the chocolate batter in the pan. Spread the remaining chocolate batter on top. With a knife, swirl through layers to marble. Bake 35 to 40 minutes. Test for doneness. When cool, cut into squares. Pack in a box, separated by layers of waxed paper, for the picnic.

This is directly from Rosalea’s book, page 46. However, I sometime shorten this recipe by using a good brownie mix adding nuts, chocolate chips, Farncelico, and a cream cheese-sugar-egg-vanilla toping. It also takes 50-60 minutes in my oven.

March 12, 2008 Tamarack Wellness Center Paintout - This is my (Brooks') painting of the Tamarack pool entrance.

Spring break at University of Oregon we painted at Hayward Field...the home of Prefontain and the famous Oregon track teams.

It rained all day so Rod and I painted from under a tent kindly left up from the previous weekend track meet. Thank you UO.

Rod ran a race on this track in the 7th grade, and he was the timing judge at several Prefontain's races. There are lots of memories in this field for Rod.

March 19th Nancy and I painted at the West Eugene Wetlands. Nice to have a wetlands inside the Eugene city limits.

Nancy does not let the cold detract from her beautiful watercolor of the wetlands.

March 21, Friday, we painted at Mt. Pisgah Aboretum. Spring is barely peaking out.

Dorothy is painting the creek that is full in the spring.

Owens Rose Garden's Cherry Tree is at least 160 years old. We Painted there Wednesday March 5, 2005 and Friday March 7, 2005. I did not make it Saturday March 8, but Eugene was sunny on Wednesday and cloudy on Friday and then sunny again Saturday. Here is Bets starting her painting of the Cherry Tree.

Here is Paul's watercolor of the cherry tree. The yellow slicker under the tree is me, Brooks. Nice job Paul. It got so warm I had to leave early. I was wearing too many layers.

March 4, 7-8:30pm Maude Kerns Gallery - Bets Cole will speak on "Spirited Journey: Women Artist"...about her journey as an artist and the Women Artists that have influenced her.

March 5, 7-8, Cherry Tree Paintout – Owens Rose Garden – Jefferson St. at the Willamette River. The 140 year old Cherry Tree is nude for the next month. It is beautiful.

March 11, Wednesday, Tamarack Paintout, 3575 Donald Street, Eugene, Oregon - Parking, water, restrooms, and cover in case of rain. Open views of neighborhood trees and the center itself.

Meet at Center Building...where student cafeteria is located.There are views of buildings, trees, sculptures, and distant hills.

March 19, Wednesday, Wetlands Paintout, Greenhill Road at the end of Fern Ridge Trail. West on 11^th and right on Greenhill across the rail road tracks to the shelter on the right. March 26, Wednesday, UO Haywood Field Paintout, 15th St. at Agate St. Eugene Oregon. Meet at Haywood Field, 15th and Agate St. Parking behind Law School and behind History Museum or on the street. Spring brake for students so there should be parking.

March 28-29, Friday-Saturday, UO History Museum Paintout, Meet at History Museum 15th and Agate behind Law school. Parking should be free during Student Vacation( but check meters carefully). Lots to paint, trees of UO, lots of plants, building, and an indian lady catching a salmon.

April 2, 4-5, Wednesday, Firday-Saturday, Hendricks Park Van Gough Birthday Paintout on Wednesday, 155th Birthday of Vincent (plein air) Van Gough is March 30th. Franklin St., south on Walnut st., Fairmont st. then left on Summit. Meet at Rhody Garden.

Dear Friends –

Please forgive the lateness of this announcement – life has been complicated lately! All the more reason to be looking forward again to painting with you on the central Oregon coast that Nelson loved as an escape into the great verities of nature.

Please welcome new people and continue to send me updates of e-mail and postal addresses. Pass the word to friends and sympathetic painters who may be interested in sharing our experience.

As discussed at the end of last year’s session, we’ll meet this year from Monday, July 7 through Saturday, July 19. Starting each day at 9:00 AM we will paint at the sites listed below come rain, wind, or brutal sun - often until evening. Feel free to take a long break for lunch: get out of the mid-day sun or weather and resume painting when the light changes and paint late into the afternoon.

Monday, July 9^th, we’ll see you at 9:00 AM sharp at Ona Beach State Park for openers.

On Wednesday evening July 16th we’ll meet at the Newport Recreation Center (225 S.E. Avery Street). A short slide presentation/talk at 7:30 will precede an informal viewing of the group’s latest work until 9:30 PM. Everyone is encouraged to bring a painting or two done during the week of painting together. It is exciting for us all to see work energized by the landscapes and the personal interactions.

On Saturday, Ju1y 19th at 1:30 PM (the final afternoon) we’ll have a potluck lunch/dinner at picnic facilities in the sheltered park below Yaquina Light (in Newport just west of the bay bridge). If you want good food and company, don’t get this location confused with the federally operated Yaquina Head Light many miles north of town. Perhaps we’ll have better weather than last year. If not, we’ll do it anyway. Bring good stuff!

For those who desire an intensive approach of focused instruction and painting challenges, I will offer a three day intensive Watercolor Workshop. The workshop fee is $190. The workshop will be July 8, 9, and 10. I welcome serious painters of all levels of experience who desire technical suggestions in watercolor and serious critique of their responses to specific painterly problems and challenges. Workshop participants can meet up with everyone on July 7^th then peel off for the next three mornings for discussion, demonstration, and assignments. We will paint together as a group and share review/critique/discussion of our work in the afternoons before rejoining everyone after 3:00PM. The workshop is offered on a space available basis with the size limited to 20 people. Last year it filled rather quickly. If you are interested in a place, please register by sending me a $50 non – refundable reservation fee. The $140 balance is payable on July 8th.

This year I will keep the teaching workshop to a single session. I will accept checks by mail in the order I receive them until the workshop fills. When I receive your reservation I will confirm with you and forward a supply list. Should I receive your reservation fee after the workshop has filled, I will return it to you and contact you about a waiting list. Feel free to inquire more about the workshop at any time by phone or e-mail.

Parking is especially tight at Seal Rock, Cummins Creek, and Yachats South Shore. Please double up on transportation to these sites. You might drive to the vicinity in your own rig and arrange to shuttle to the site with friends. I have personally received some pressure from Park personnel, so we would all appreciate your efforts at these locations in particular. I have scheduled our locations to avoid the minus tide events that tend to bring us into conflict with Park activities.

Rain or shine, bring your painting gear in any media, lunches, jackets, hats, and sunscreen. See you there!

Sunny Eugene Paintouts - February 2008

Sunny Eugene provided a perfect day to paint on the banks of the Willamette River at EWEB Plaza. Bets and Cathy were first to arrive and well on their way to nice paintings by the time I got there.
