January 2008 Paint-Out Schedule Eugene-Springfield

January 2008 Paint-out schedule for Plein Air Painters of Eugene-Springfield

January is our coldest month in Eugene-Springfield …Avg. High is 46 degrees and average low is 33 degrees…and occasionally it rains (avg. 7.65 inches)….so we are painting in town, close to cover, warm spaces and hot coffee.

Jan 2, 4, and 5, Wed., Friday, Sat. Oakway Center, Oakway and Coburg Road, Paint-out in the patio area- cover, restrooms, and coffee at Borders Books.

Jan. 9, 11, and 12 (Wed., Fri., Sat) Park Blocks, 8th and Oak Downtown Eugene…there is cover in both park blocks and heat and coffee at Full City Coffee and Bagel Sphere.

Jan 11, 5:30-7:30pm is the artist reception at Emerald Art Center for us and the other artist showing downstairs. You can bring chips and dips type stuff for the reception, or just show up and enjoy the company.

Jan. 16, 18, and 19 (Wed., Fri., Sat) Springfield, Wed. and Saturday at Island Park…near Willamalane Center (C St. at Mill St.) that has restrooms and coffee. Friday January 18th is “Free Friday” at Emerald Art Center, 500 Main St. Springfield, and I have volunteered to demo “Plein Air Painting all year around” from 1-3pm in the afternoon. I demonstrate dressing for the weather, packing watercolor and acrylics for painting outside, and some techniques I have learned from Bets Cole, Humberto Gonzalez and Sarkis Antikajian…my plein air mentors. This will be for painters that have not painted with us. None of our regular painters need any of my advice. So I suggest the regular painters can paint at Island Park or downstairs at the Emerald Art Center (especially if it is raining).

Jan. 23, 25, 26 (Wed., Fri., Sat) 5th St. Market at 5th St. and Pearl St. There is cover, coffee, and warm spaces.

Jan. 30, Feb. 1, 2 (Wed., Fri., Sat) Art Block, Willamette St. between 7th and 8th St. Eugene. (I call this art block because there are 4 art galleries right here)…there is cover along the street and in the parking garage over the block. Coffee at Perigino's, warm spaces in all the art galleries.

Emily Carr's Birthday Celebration - December 12-14, 2007

Bets Cole baked an Emily Carr Cake for her birthday. It was completely edible gingerbread, while keeping with Emily's wonderful painting style.

Dorothy and Sarkis warming their hands on a cup of coffee.

Close up of Emily Carr's cake.

Sherrie brought her plein air dog to the party, and to paint with.

Mara came late for cake, but she was in time to paint.

Sarkis painted a large painting before the party (he arrived 9am) and this one after the party. The Emily Carr trees are calling to him.

Dorothy drew Emily Carr trees all afternoon.

Brooks painted Emily Carr trees also. I tried to paint them all, but will have to return Friday, December 14, 2007, to paint the trees I missed.

EWEB Paintout December 5-7, 2007

Wednesday, December 5, 2007,
Nancy arrived early at EWEB and started looking for views using her "Bets Cole" image finder. Very high tech.

The weather got warmer, 55F at least, so Nancy moves out into EWEB patio and takes off her hat and gloves. Nice warm day for painting in the Willamette Valley.

I even took my hat off. Overdressed for a day next to the Willamette river. Nancy and I walked to 5th St. Market to meet Peggie at lunch in the food court.

Friday, December 7, 2007, the weather turned cool again (40s), but still nice views along the Willamette River. This is my painting of the trees across the river in Alton Baker Park.

Lane Community College Paintout - November 28-30, 2007

November 28, 2007, is was a cold day at Lane Community College. Mark paints outside in spite of the cold. His "fortress" image attracted favorable comments from several students. But we had to go inside the art building to get warm.

Nancy returned from France just in time to join us on campus. A little cold, but nice views.

Brooks was painting the Art Building when a school photographer came alone and took pictures for the LCC Torch, the weekly paper. I wound up on the front page.

Friday, November 30, 2007, Marilyn and Dorothy both decided to paint inside of the Central Building cafeteria. Lots of students to paint.

Friday I painted the "Beloved" statue in front of the Performing Arts Building at LCC. It was still cold, but Ms. Beloved did not seem to mind.

December 2007 Paintout Schedule

December is the wettest month in Eugene-Springfield so I have only selected one location per week. This way you can pick the best weather day to appear. I will try to make Wednesday and Friday and sometimes Saturday, but I don't do ice or snow. Any slick streets and I will stay home and I recommend you do too.
See you outside painting.

Dorothy's Birthday Paintout Mt. Pisgah November 19

Monday, November 19, 2007, at Mt. Pisgah, Eugene, Oregon
Dorothy's birthday, we are painting rain or shine. Actually rain and shine. The weather changed every half hour all day long. All the creeks and Willamette River are full from the rain all weekend.

Sherri Mac paints in the rain/sun/rain/sun/....Sherri demonstrated her "paint in the rain with two umbrellas" technique.

Inside we gathered at 1pm for Dorothy's birthday celebration. Brooks, Sherri, Sarkis, Dorothy, Phemie, and Peggie is taking the picture. The new shelter at Mt. Pisgah is dry with lots of windows to enjoy the view...even if not heated.

Sherri, Dorothy, Sarkis, Phemie and Peggie get ready for cake.

After cake the sun comes out and we are back to painting.

Dorothy and her tree. She painted outside even if I photographed it indoors.

Halloween Paintout at UO Pioneer Cemetary

Sarkis can find color on the grayest day. Halloween at the Pioneer Cemetery started out foggy and gray. The sun eventually came out and the color that Sarkis had predicted appeared.

Robin caught the sun and the fall colors.

Paul enjoyed the sun too as the afternoon got warmer.

Mara and Coda sat in the shade and painted the stones and trees.

Dorothy was there painting and sketching.

Brooks came as a black-eyed pea. Unfortunately you cannot see the large "P" painted on his tea shirt. Brooks painted the union soldier memorial, twice.

Paint Out Locations for November 2007

Here is a list of paint out locations for November 2007.
"Tools of the Trade Show" at the UO Bookstore is Nov. 7/8. They will have 25% off art supplies.
I hope to make most of the other paint outs. Especially Dorothy Freer's Birthday paint out at Mt. Pisgah, Nov. 19th.
We celebrated Dorothy's birthday last year on Skinner Butte, so we are starting a tradition. If anyone else would like to have a paint out on their birthday, please share your birthday with me and I will put it on our calendar. Sarkis was the first one to Oakway Center, as usual. It was cloudy and cool all day, but no rain.

Dorothy painted watercolors till it got too wet for the paint to dry.

Bets was using acrylics to capture the mood of the small patio.

Paintout at Karen and Tom Reid's

It was a little cool last Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at Karen and Tom Reid's place on the McKinzie River. Rosie dressed warmly just in case, but it did not rain.

Lois paints watercolor of the long views down to the McKinzie River.

Jacki and her painting of the Reid's house. I love the bright red tree.

Carol has the best view of the river from the Reid's porch. Thanks to Tom she had some cover from the wind.

Sarkis is painting bright colorful oil paintings. He painted two today.

Karen and Tom served hot soup and salad for lunch. Thank you Karen and Tom, is was delicious.

We got 12 people around Karen and Tom's large table. Thanks again for the hospitality.

September 2007 Skinner Butte and River House Eugene Oregon

End of September and we are painting on top of Skinner Butte overlooking downtown Eugene.
Beautiful view and very sunny September 26, Wednesday.

Robin found the shade and got here first.

Dorothy and I were in the sun, but the view was worth it, even with the smoke from a forest service burn in the air.

Sally, Jacki, and Sally's friend from California arrived last and moved up the hill into the shade. I don't blame them.

Friday, September 28, the rains started. We don't let that bother us.

Phemie brought her umbrella. Good thinking.

Dorothy and Peggie were dressed for the weather, but still got a little wet.

I painted till the acrylic paint started washing off the paper. Note the fine transparency in this work ;-{)

Paintout Island Park Springfield Oregon September 2007

Under the Springfield bridge we painted water, trees , and reflections.

Here is Mara and Coda just getting started.

This is Jacki's colorful painting.

Thjs it Pam's watercolor of reflections and Pam painting.

Here is Jacki with her painting.

Coda really enjoyed this paintout.
